Re: Atari haul from university

It also looks as if there's a SUN Sparc Classic in there too. When I was at University a maths lecturer used an early 520ST to print documents on an Atari laser printer. I think it might have even been a printer server for his office. Probably they had a budget and a ST would have been much cheaper ...

Re: idea. measure speed

I haven't been able to get the profiler in Hatari to produce any meaningful results. I think the problem using the blitter is the STs interleaved bitplanes making it difficult to leave certain bitplanes untouched whereas the Amiga's non-interleaved bitplanes make it much easier to clear one bp at a ...

Brilliant Peter! The new colours look fantastic.
Question: If the emulator is overclocked will the frame counter insert wait vbls to limit it to 25FPS?

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Yes Peter is right, they had a license to convert the game so no copyright issues. It was standard practice to use VHS tapes to see the arcade game. Ocean used this method in articles I have read. The strange thing about Outrun is that the shape of the car was better on the Spectrum version. It even...

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Bug:
00km/h is sometimes displayed by the speed print routine. Strangely the C64 version also does this under certain cicumstances.
The original arcade version never displayed 00km/h it was always 0km/h when the car was not moving.

Re: Outrun with frame counter

The new car looks fantastic! It seems that the driver and the lady are sprites layered on top of the car so that after a collision she can point at him and their hair has at least 2 frames of animation. I don't think any home computer port had that feature.

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Those palm trees look cool, however I have realised that in the arcade version the palm trees are flipped horizontally if they are on the right hand side of the road. I don't know if it's possible to have other sprites for the right hand side or if it would take too much memory to scale and pre-shif...

Re: Rainbow Islands development story

This was originally published in either Zero magazine or Ace. I can't remember which and I can't find it at the moment.
It's good that this is a searchable document. Nice mention of Run Length Compression and the use of STOS and a great game.

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Ah... the Mega Drive version. It was released in 1991 I think and was programmed by Robuto Games who also did the Saturn version. It's not fair to compare them really because they had access to resources that US Gold\Probe and ultimately Ice Software (Iain Morrison) didn't have i.e. access to people...

Whizzcat\Delta Force Protracker Replay Rout

Hi guys. I can't remember where I got the Whizzcat\Delta Force Protracker Replay Routine from. It may have been from a standalone disk or it may have been on an issue of Disk Maggie. The STFM routine on ProTracker 2.1 is definitely different from the code I have. To cut a long story short: I wanted ...

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Great work Peter. How much of the copy protection was still remaining? It would try to read those tracks but just ignored the return value. My friend had the original Outrun from the Discovery Pack and I identified the copy protection that would stop the game running from a casual copy using MonST. ...

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Superb work Peter! I wish I could help with the code optimization. With Outrun you have to be really careful about using registers they didn't use in the tight loops because they've probably used them for something else outside the loop or in the calling function then you have to consider the cost o...

Re: Outrun with frame counter

On the Amiga\Vampire conversion of Cannonball they switched off the clouds because it took too much CPU time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yVqB13EtZg Someone converted the car to 8 colours for an Amiga port that was never completed. Remapping the palette may be challenging. I have attached the o...

You have an Outrun machine?
That's possibly the coolest thing I've heard in the past 24 hours!

Yes, but the cabinet is damaged. It needs a new front panel and foot rest. The electronics work, but the monitor has severe burn in.

Re: GFA Basic, STOS or Asm?

The Amiga version looks great. It needs fast vertical scrolling and lots of sprites. It would be possible using STOS and the Misty Extension but for best performance you should use 68000 assembly language. You can achieve 4 pixel vertical scrolling with a double buffered display. The screen on the S...

Re: Lotto 649 Package for Atari ST (Not yet Done)

Hi Russ, Could you explain the history of this program please? Was it originally written in QBasic but now ported and maintained in QB64? Will the original program run correctly in the current build of QB64? https://www.portal.qb64.org/ I was wondering if GFA BASIC is the best language for an ST ver...

Re: Outrun with frame counter

Well done! ST game logic bug: 1. The car accelerates slowly past 193km/h in low gear. Being in low gear should prevent the car accelerating past 193km/h. 2. In the arcade version acceleration is slower below 193km/h in high gear. I also think the blitter would be best used for the road drawing if po...

Re: Enabling Debug Console On Windows

Thanks Cyprian.

This works:
hatari -W

But starting Hatari with a config file it would only work if bConsoleWindow=TRUE was in the cfg file:
hatari -W -c config\stfm_1mb_tos_104.cfg
By default bConsoleWindow=FALSE was in the cfg file.

Enabling Debug Console On Windows

Does anyone know how to enable the Debug Console in Hatari On Windows? I have started Hatari with the -W switch but pressing AltGr+Pause displays Console in the bottom bar but no console Window is displayed. I have tested Hatari 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 on Windows 10 64-bit. It's a bit of a pain to use the p...

Re: Lotto 649 Package for Atari ST (Not yet Done)

Hi Russ, Interesting program. I see you don't include GFA BASIC in this latest disk image. Maybe you could include a link in a small readme.txt so that people can download It. I think the ST Format magazine version is not for redistribution but most Atari programmers have a copy. In STEEM I copied G...
