Re: foss-north 2018: Atari ST Free Operating Systems

SDL reports keyboard events both when a key is pressed and when a key is released, but there is no clean way to detect a key *release* in TOS. I don't know how SDL solves this, but it seems to be room for improvement here. SDL for Atari can use several drivers for keyboard input. It can be selected...

Re: foss-north 2018: Atari ST Free Operating Systems

Dosbox would be great to have on the FireBee, Milan 060, Hades 060, Vamipre, ... I compiled it long ago, and I was even able to run a few very old MS-DOS games (I can't remember which ones... Maybe Pac-Man or something like that). DOSBox for MiNT BUT ⋅  It is extremely slow, even on ARAny...

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words :D Actually Faucon2001 has done a huge step forward in this area. Tell more about this. Is there a link? Just in case: There are many hyperlinks in the PDF. Just click project names, pictures... and your browser will open the relevant page. BTW, Faucon2001'...

foss-north 2018: Atari ST Free Operating Systems

Last week, I made a presentation at foss-north 2018 , in Gothenburg, Sweden. Subtitles will be available soon. Main topics were GCC, EmuTOS, FreeMiNT, emulators... but also, many software and exotic hardware. Basically, it shows what can be done with FreeMiNT distributions, on various hardware. You ...

Re: SMSPlus for the Atari falcon

The PSG is emulated using the YM-chip, because they're fairly similar. Periodic noise is approximated when possible, and the noise channel is simulated by using free channels or by enabling noise on some other channel with roughly the same volume. Exactly what I had imagined to do! I would love to ...

Re: Best ST joypad?

Thanks Foxie for this precise information. I don't know why Atari chose to connect to pin 5. It could be used as some kind of clock signal for something that isn't a joystick. It could also be used for auto-fire. You could reliably input one nibble of data each time the keyboard processor reads the ...

(speaking about Pin 5 of ST Joystick port 1)
Foxie wrote:That pin is essential for reading the mouse and joystick.

How is this possible, since normal joysticks don't use the Pin 5, and the mouse is plugged in the other port?

Re: Best ST joypad?

I always prefered to use a game pad for platform games and want to have a separate button for jump and fire. I hate to use joystick up for jump. I never got any precision in the game by using this. See there a non-destructive solution to jump with button 2 with a SEGA Master System pad. With minor ...

ST display ratio

Hi, I wonder what is the correct display ratio for ST Low / Medium video modes. The goal is to use correct ratio in screenshots / videos. You can easily help by measuring the actual size of the 320x200 screen on your monitor. My monitor is 16/10, and the image is slightly distorted, even in 4/3 mode...

Re: The FPGA and non-Atari cores deserve the cover of this forum?

Atari ST emulators (Hatari, Steem, ARAnyM...) and FPGA clones (Suska, FireBee, Atari ST core for MiST) are totally legitimate here, as that's Atari-compatible stuff. But IMHO, non-Atari cores for MiST are out of topic here.

Re: The FPGA and non-Atari cores deserve the cover of this forum?

I must agree with you. Even if that FPGA stuff is interesting, it is completely unrelated to Atari machines or operating systems. That is particularly visible in "Active topics", where we mainly expect to find Atari stuff.
That's just my opinion, anyway.

Re: GEMDOS on Apple Lisa

You should port EmuTOS on Lisa... and add support for Lisa external harddisk... Well, I already considered that... Very possible to load EmuTOS from floppy on Lisa, as it haves enough RAM :) One would just have to recompile EmuTOS for non-Atari hardware, and write a floppy bootloader for Lisa. And ...

Re: EmuTOS Cartridge?

Look at the readme inside emutos-cartridge-*.zip. It is a special EmuTOS version, as a 128K diagnostic cartridge for the ST ROM-port. Due to size limitation, it does not contain AES/Desktop, only EmuCON command-line interpreter. But that's enough to run textmode TOS programs, or AUTO games, and even...

Re: Bash on TOS

If I can figure out the right way to bind CTRL I can at least get nano working, which would be neat. I’ve tried TERM=st52, vt52, and Geneva. I'm not sure to understand the issue with Ctrl key. Ctrl is a dead key, it can't be used alone (at least with TOS/MiNT functions). Maybe you have trouble with...

Re: Bash on TOS

I also found some recently-ported tools to MiNT over here that claim to also work with TOS through MiNTlib. That's my page. Indeed, that software also run on plain TOS, because it is compiled with MiNTLib. MiNTLib is smart enough to use MiNT features if available, or fall back to TOS features other...

Re: Bash on TOS

Yes, bash can run on TOS, but due to the lack of fork() you can't do anything with it. It only makes sense with FreeMiNT. As an alternative, if you need a simple shell for TOS, you can give a try to EmuCON. It is shipped with EmuTOS, but it is actually a small TOS program which can run on any versio...
