Re: Printing with Steem v 2.61

Woohoo! Successfully printing at last! :D

alexh gave the final tip that solved the problem! (Changing file mode bits)

By the way Ant, I'm in no way insulted at being shown a picture of a parallel port

Atari CD ROM

I've got an old CD-ROM from the FaST club, but my Linux based PC doesn't recognize the format.

Does anyone know what format was used on ST CD-ROMs?

ST Parallel Port comparison with PC Parallel Port

The literature that came with the ST claimed that the printer port was an industry standard port. However, the way Atari implemented it was almost but not quite standard! This means that I can't get Signum to print from an emulated ST running on my Linux PC. Can anyone shed light on exactly how the ...

The write permissions had been changed. Changing them back was quick and easy...

I'm just curious as to why the file permissions changed in the first place...

Emulator File Backups go bad!

I've been rearranging my harddisk, and so made backups of important files to CD However, I note that upon reinstallation of the STeem emulator files, said files are no longer runnable! All the data files related to the ST are fine. By going back to the STeem website and collecting new copies, I can ...

Re: SH205 Upgrade Query

Agreed, there are indeed plenty of better hard drives available now. However, thanks to Atari's decision to use a weird sub-version of the SCSII interface  , I am having difficulties finding a drive that will work with the ST...

SH205 Upgrade Query

I've got an old (ancient?) SH205 hard disc drive

The ST hard disc interface was apparently almost but not quite industry standard

Taking a peek inside the casing, I see that actual drive is a Tandon TM262

Is it reasonable to fit a more modern drive into the casing and expect it to work?

Re: PC plugin board ST

Doesn't sound like it would fit my requirements: I was hoping for hardware that included the ST's version of the parallel/printer port. Apparently, this was almost, but not quite industry standard. I've got an application that will only operate with the ST's version of the port. Does anybody know of...

PC plugin board ST

I remember ads being placed in a small circulation subscription only magazine (I think it was called something like ST Applications), for a PC plugin board that was essentially an ST.

Does anybody have any info on this please?

Hard Drive Icons

What is/was the maximum number of hard drive icons accessible on the ST desktop?

Currently I've got 10 such icons on the ST desktop representing 10 logical drives running under STeem, but I can't create another. Is this a limitation of the ST or STeem?

TIA

Replacing 720K floppy with USB port

Since it's getting increasingly difficult to find 720K floppies, and even HD floppies look like going the way of the dinosaur, I was wondering about the feasibility of replacing the ST's floppy drive with a USB port, in order to make the transfer of data between a PC and an ST quick and painless usi...

Re: PC/ST networking Question

Yeh, good idea about the floppies ppera. In an ideal world, that's the route I'd have taken. That solution has two flaws however: 720k floppies and ST disk drives. I don't think either are manufactured anymore, and they're becoming rarer than hens teeth! I'd rather not have to fart about with networ...

Re: PC/ST networking Question

My idea isn't for the ST to print over a network, as it will be connected directly to the printer. That's part of the reason for the slowness of the print output... the ST (running Signum!2) takes very exact and direct control over the print process, resulting in very high quality print output. Cons...

Re: PC/ST networking Question

Thanks for the suggestion Simon, but I don't think it'll work: Ghostscript/Postscript is a page description language, which is likely to get confused by the output of Signum, which I suspect must produce its own version of Postscript in order for it to be able to output very high quality technical f...

Yeh, sorry Simon, I should have been a little more forthcoming in the explaination of my difficulties,,, I'm actually running an emulated ST on a PC with a Linux OS. The emulator is STeem. The ST program I'm running on STeem is Signum!2 (probably the greatest program ever). Although I can create Sig...

Re: need a signum file converter

Signum itself should convert the file to ascii (use the Save ASCII option under the file menu) However, if you're attempting to save a document that contains anything other than ordinary text, you're going to be sorely dissapointed, as ASCII was only designed to deal with very basic alphanumeric cha...

ALT key + numeric keypad combination question

When I was using Signum!2 (probably the best program in the world) on the ST, I used to assign characters to the numeric keypad, and access them using the ALT + numeric key pad key (eg ALT + 1 or ALT + 5 etc). I'm now using Signum!2 on an emulated ST running on PC hardware, but cannot get the ALT + ...
