Re: "MiSTer PC Engine CD & TurboGrafx-CD Begins"

Please forgive my ignorance on who is the creator of the current PC Engine CD core work. Will the source code eventually be out there for others to pick up if the interest otherwise stagnates? If you want to work on this, go ahead and do so. Nobody is currently working on this in a capacity that wi...

Re: Would be possible Mame on Arm Soc like ScummVM?

When i was thinking about new FPGA project (it even had no name) many knowledgeable FPGA devs said that HDMI won't work. It's completely wrong way. It has a lot of limitations, etc, etc... If i would listen to them the MiSTer wouldn't appear. Sometimes experiments look weird and wrong in the beginn...

Re: Would be possible Mame on Arm Soc like ScummVM?

When expanding the scope of a project, I don't think "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks" is really the best attitude. From a developer/science perspective maybe it's interesting to see what almost works, but from a users perspective they go through all kinds of frustrat...

Re: Would be possible Mame on Arm Soc like ScummVM?

No matter how much you torture the code, you're not going to performance even as good as a raspberry pi 2. "Hybrid" emulation is fairy dust at this point, the effort of making someone elses software work with fpga hardware is probably more difficult than just rewriting the core in HDL full...

Re: Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - MiSTer Community

I have many years of IRC experience. Believe me I know what is it. If there are so much willing to help the users then why i don't see much activity on Wiki? Your argument about "buried in a 50 pages thread" doesn't work for Wiki. It's more about hype than help. I cannot be everywhere. Li...

Re: Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - MiSTer Community

Sorge, if you can, please pin this thread so people can find the discord server link. I prefer if someone will make a FAQ in this forum and answer a popular questions than direct users somewhere else. I know people today don't like to read. They like to open the page and shoot the questions right a...

Re: Block Diagram?

pick any modern projects (snes, nes, genesis, etc) and take a look in /sys for HPS_IO.sv This will show you most of what you need to know about that is sent from the HPS side of the platform. There are other things which can be identified in sys_top.sv if you want to really learn about the stuff tha...

Re: MISTer (Main Core)

Would it be a problem if I add a small commit to make the core create a ROM folder for itself when the user chooses to load a file from the OSD? I can't think of a situation where you wouldn't want this behavior.

Re: MiSTer NES Core

Is there someone working on a pal option in the nes core? I've been adding basic building blocks to make it work as I do other things. The CPU/PPU alignment working with the SDRAM timing will be the trickiest part of that, but the PPU also needs some work. It's not structured in a way that will ada...

Re: MISTer (Main Core)

PC Engine is stupid because confusing mainly with Desktop PC. Otherwise it's up to manufacturer how to name it. So TurboGrafx is pretty much fine name. I agree, PC Engine does not work in english at all. The only core name I don't like is minimig. It was very confusing to me to find the Amiga core ...

as i said, it was just (bad) examples. For the aspect ratio, it was just here for discussion, i've seen that for snes, some games where not correctly thought for scaling the internal resolution to 4/3 aspect ratio (https://www.videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/43-87-aspect-ratio-correction-for-s...

Re: Genesis Core

[*] aspect ratio : you have 4/3 and 16/9. i was thinking adding 16/10 (and i do not know the 8/7 one apply as well as in the snes core) or perhaps have a more flexible way to change this, perhaps have a separate list for the x axis and y axis, but keeping the simple generic option. Personally, i pr...

Re: Genesis Core

Edit : some examples of work that can be done with basic knowledge and which does not seem to be that interesting/important : * add the video mode timer to core that do not have one (sms) * code reorganisation : the conf str which now can be one instead of multiple ones (nes, sms, ...) * there are ...

Re: Scaler

I would rather have 2 versions. The simple one - it's the current menu look. In 99% of cases you just need to run the core from menu. For advanced control it's possible to switch to GUI. But it still need to think how to use it on traditional TV where are ~200-240 active lines only. For such low re...

MiSTer HPS Build Environment

@Sorgelig

How do you recommend that we set up a build environment for HPS MiSTer? Main is easy to cross compile because it has minimal libraries and dependencies, but for more complex libraries it becomes more difficult. I would use LXDE on mister itself, but it seems broken with the latest updates.

Re: Scaler

I have been playing a bit with weston. It is very responsive. Rather than making everything based out of console TTY, have you considered having the menu core simply run fully within this compositor? It would make managing features, the UI, and input much more coordinated I think. A few general purp...

ini options originally supposed to be set once and forget. In practice, I add custom groups and settings all the time for different cores, like vsync_adjust settings, vscale, etc. Maybe I am a bit of an advanced user, but even a new user would have a much easier time if such settings were more obvi...

Re: Scripting news

A graphical dialog wrapper would probably be a good stop-gap. I think in the long run, scripts should only serve the role of very niche/special purpose actions. If something needs to be done by a user all the time (updating, ini settings) a dedicated graphical method is the only sensible choice.

Re: SRAM Options

In any of these save algorithms, it would be very useful to have a way to see when the last save was done in the OSD. Or maybe a small confirmation somewhere that the save was just done. Currently, we're never sure unless we save manually. And there's always a risk, with manual save, to overwrite y...

Re: MiSTer NES Core

@Sorgelig A user on discord was interested in using real NES peripherals directly with the core. I suggested he use a little sparkfun level shifter board to the user IO port and just make a usb to NES-port adapter. I wrote some simple code for him: https://github.com/Kitrinx/NES_MiSTer/tree/serialio...

Re: SRAM Options

I understand SRAM is not automatically written to the SD card due to some games using it as in game RAM and SD cards have a limited write life. I know I'm not the only one to be frustrated by losing a few hours of game play on a RPG. Kitrinx's auto save on menu load is great, but from time to time ...

Re: ScummVM running on FrameBuffer

Yea and no... the parallel is good, but the use case is new, very specific to emulation of old hardware platforms. MiSTer probably is the first platform which uses both FPGA and software on an OS to emulate different aspects of a retro machine (at least that I know). Maybe I see a closer parallel w...
