Re: Paul Woakes

I first played Mercenary when I was a kid, with a pirate copy, and found it good but boring once all the buildings were destroyed! Until I understood there was much more than this, and finally found how to get inside the underground complex. I got hooked, played all the sequels like crazy and decide...

Paul Woakes

Sad news, I don't think I've seen it on the forum: learnt a few days ago that games author Paul Woakes died in July 2017.

He was co-founder of Novagen, and published Mercenary, Damocles, Backlash, Encounter, ...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Ah, no idea, I dont't think so but I made all copies using keyboard and not mouse, so maybe I did some newbie mistake ;)
I'll have to check that again, thanks for the hint!

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Ok, got the Ultrasatan working with the SCSI2SD :-D The led problem was that one of the led cable was rotten and got cut as son as I moved it. I changed it for another spare led+cable I had and it works fine. Two questions thought: 1- the system keeps asking me for confirmation at each and every fil...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Hi all, and happy new year! Just a follow-up: I bought the SCSI2SD card, and it seems to work like a charm as internal drive on the Mega STE. I had to struggle a bit with HDDriver to have the micoSD card formatted as 2 partitions - just had to set the partitions size to 511.9MB instead of 512. 1GB i...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Thanks! So, there are different chips for the DMA? Ones I saw, reported as faulty, looked very different (that would explain why I didn't find it on this board ;) )
I had taken a look under the SCSI card, but didn't notice anything that could be it - well, I was maybe looking for the wrong chip...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

I opened the Mega STE again, to see which DMA chip I got, one that Jookie reported as causing problems with UltraSatan, or the right one... As I'm not familiar with ST internals, I feel stupid but I don't seem to find it??? The motherboard looks like this one: http://www.atari-wiki.com/images/d/d3/S...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

I don't see why someone would need beside UltraSatan (which has 2 SD card slots) some SCSItoSD adapter. You really need 3rd SD card slot ? Two reasons here: - I have both a 520STE and a Mega STE, and these machines could end up being distant from 130km. - internal solution avoids an extra power sup...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Hi, For question number 5 I suggest to consider the scsi2sd option since ultrasatan with adapter for internal usage won't allow you to use the external acsi port animore (as I learnt from lotharek). My scsi2sd works great inside my mega ste and I still have the opportunity to use an external ultras...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Thanks all for the replies. It's good to read various experiences! I just changed the fan, thanks to D-Bug's and Troed's excellent blogs. Amazing difference ;) Thanks to Eero Tamminen, I now know I got a TOS 2.05. Stupid question: what's the difference with TOS 2.06? So far I mainly found 2.06 fixes...

Re: MIST and ST cartridge (and Oric)

Thanks.
I think there's a hardware part in the Steinberg dongles, at least I already tried to image them years ago, with no result in emulators.
I'll have tokeep the STs then ;)

MIST and ST cartridge (and Oric)

Hi, I'm wondering if I'm not going to leave the "real hardware" for newer machines or emulation. As I still have programs with dongles, my question is: is there any chance that, some day, a MIST version appears with both MIDI plugs AND a hardware cartridge plug for the hardware dongles? (C...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Thanks for the pointers and replies guys ;) Game compatibility is not a problem for me as I'll keep my 520 STE anyway. I was more looking for a maximum of Mega-STE enhanced / specific programs, or any advantage I could get wth the Mega STE compared to the 520/4MB. And great, ParcpUSB, I had the spec...

Re: Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Thanks for the reply!
Regarding 6/ I was wondering if MSA transfers is still the norm. I read people are using special hardware (kryoflux?) and wondered if it's a new standard (seomthing that could handle special protected formats), and could be easily bought?

Dilemma: Mega STE or not Mega STE?

Hi all, I'm requesting your help on a few things, here's the (long) story. About 10-12 years ago I bought a secondhand Mega STE (4MB, hard drive), hoping to use it to transfer disks faster than my good old ST, thanks to the faster serial port (I was using MSA / Ghostlink then). Reality is that I nev...

Maybe just a matter of taste, but how can Ghostlink not be in the list?
This is probably the tool I used the most before getting HDDriver and SaTanDisk.

I got a question for my personal culture... Does the ST Book have a cartridge slot? So one could use Steinberg software with dongles for instance? Thanks! EDIT: self-reply, reading there: http://st-news.com/issues/st-news-volume-8-issue-2/previews/the-st-books-practical-performance/ "If "C...

Re: Image runners ?

Thanks for the quick reply! Ah, I understand, lower level format means more code thus memory and CPU are required. No point doing something for "all formats / all software" if it can only work on a few machines indeed. EDIT: BTW, good idea to try and use less memory! Keep up the good work,...

Image runners ?

I have plugged my ST again a few weeks ago, along with its UltraSatan, and wondered if there were other Image Runners than IMGRF (Image run fast) ? It's an excellent piece of software but a significant % of the menu disks or games I tried seem to crash when run (I'm not blaming the program as I didn...

Re: Booting from external floppy drive

I recall a friend of mine made a small program to directly boot on my external drive B on a STF (the internal drive was signle-sided, and the extrnal was double-sided).
I only used it to boot games but it worked fine without any hardware modification.
