Re: BBC Micro

VGA out on the BBC Micro core has a jiggling effect for me I've captured it here bit can't upload it because of the 500KB limit, but I can share if needed. I don't have this with any other core and it's the same no matter what software I load on the BBC. See my post about 5 items above for a partia...

Re: SNES core

Ok the boot.rom mechanism works on my side but I only have video on HDMI, nothing on VGA. Similar for me: 15.7 kHz fine via SCART, but when scandoubler is enabled then my VGA monitor does not pick up the signal. I wonder whether it is the non standard vertical frequency of 60.1 Hz INFO: Video resol...

Try my unofficial release of MiSTer main (see above) which detects the copier header in the carts and skips it. It may help to fix some of the 'black screen' issues.

Re: SNES core

you need to use any game ROM as a boot.rom, so SNES will start with preloaded game and will provide the video. Thanks. that was it. Furthermore the carts I downloaded were SMC format, therefore containing 512 byte copier header. This needs to be skipped in order to read the raw cart data. I've made...

Re: SNES core

Thanks for the confirmation. On other cores I can see this (or similar) line printed on the console when the core starts: INFO: Video resolution: 641 x 568, fHorz = 31.3KHz, fVert = 50.1Hz, fPix = 27.99MHz INFO: Frame time (100MHz counter): VGA = 1996799, HDMI = 0 But on my build of SNES core I can'...

Does MiSTer SNES core support VGA output? I can't manage to make it work on my de0ns. I've also recompiled MiSTer main arm binary just to be sure.

Re: Alternative developemnt FPGA boards for hobbyists

I just don't understand what DE10-nano is doing here. It's an affordable FPGA board with plenty of resources, I think it should be in the list. Terasic produces several boards below 150USD. DE0-nano, DE0-nano-SoC, DE10-lite, DE1. These boards are indeed fine for tinkering and there is plenty of oth...

Alternative developemnt FPGA boards for hobbyists

I recently discovered an interesting FPGA board on Aliexpress. Considering its price and the FPGA used, I thought it's worth sharing the info. Also if you find a board with reasonable price ( up to 150 USD ) and plenty of resources (let's say more than 70K of LE ) which is publicly available to buy,...

Re: SD card utility on Win 7

Another way is to ask somebody to do the installation procedure for you on his/her machine, then dump the SD card into an image and uploads it to a place where you can download it. You will download it, unpack it and then use either WinDiskImager or Etcher (both win tools) or use plain 'dd' command ...

Re: BBC Micro

I just ported BBCMicro core to my de0ns version of MiSTer. One thing I noticed was strong screen flicker caused by the default interlaced mode. I remember that interlaced mode is how the original computer works, so in this respect the core reproduces it perfectly. However my eyes suffer watching the...

Re: Arduino MKR Vidor 4000

Using EEPROM for each core loading isn't a good way as it will wear out - it's not supposed to be used this way. It's a valid concern. I checked the part datasheet (W25Q16DV) which specifies "More than 100,000 erase/program cycles". If I calculate that in average I will erase the flash 15...

Re: Arduino MKR Vidor 4000

Excellent analysis - it has more information than I expected. :) According to schematic hardware SPI on MCU has connection to FPGA, so at least communication with FPGA can be fast. The board has a Flash memory connected to the FPGA. I wonder whether some sort of 'FPGA bootloader' could be designed t...

Arduino MKR Vidor 4000

This new board from Arduino seems like an interesting toy. It's a combination of ARM Cortex M0 and FPGA Intel (Altera) Cyclone 10CL016 (16K LE) with 8MB of SDRAM and Micro HDMI port on a small board, plus pins to connect peripherals (SD card and joysticks - possibly NES style could be used as they r...

Re: Joystick testing thread

I made a fix for sticking key issue observed on PS3 gamepads and Xbox360 controllers. The issue was observed in menu and during gameplay, the directional pads got stuck to one direction and game could not be played. This is hopefully fixed in my unofficial build. If you have PS3 or Xbox360 controlle...

Re: Occasionally can't get OSD after switching cores

I do have a heatsink though. Cool! Once you install a fan the problem will most likely disappear. Even a small but constant air flow that removes the accumulated heat from the heat sink is usually enough to keep the FPGA cool and prevent stability issues. Let us know whether the fan resolved the is...

Re: Prepare SD Card for MiSTer - OSX

There is already such tool. Official MiSTer SD card installer. Of course there is, that's why we have this thread here. The card installer is limited and does not work on all PC configurations. I know, nobody stated it is perfect and will work an every possible combination of hardware and OS and I'm...

Re: Prepare SD Card for MiSTer - OSX

Maybe if the existing tool allowed to create the SD card image file as an option (as well as writing to the SD card directly) - that would be an alternative solution without requiring a sharing service space. Something like "write to a file 4GB, 8GB" options. In that case users could run i...

Re: Occasionally can't get OSD after switching cores

Any ideas what could be happening here? Apology if I'm stating the obvious - do you have a heat sink and active cooling on your MiSTer (you did not mention it in your description)? Reading your previous post about a fan plate it appears to me you might run MiSTer without it. If that's the case, ple...

Re: Is my DE10-Nano Broken?

IIRC it was included in my kernel. I tested it today and indeed it is included. My Xbox360 (genuine) game pad was recognised by MiSTer and does work. I could define the buttons, but the gamepad in games is unusable as it gets stuck in one direction after pressing a directional button (I tried to de...

Re: IO Board _ Weird colors

I took a look at your snapshots of IO board and resistors R1 and R7 are not soldered. That's the reason of dull colours, as the bright intensities are not propagated to the video signal. The resistors are both 510 Ohm and their empty pads are located at the bottom of the board. Solder them and you s...

Re: Is my DE10-Nano Broken?

XBox pads won't work (due to proprietary MS shenanigans). Recent Linux kernels have support for Xbox pads, but they need to be explicitly enabled in the kernel config. Enable JOYSTICK_XPAD (location in kernel 4.4: Device Drivers -> Input device support -> Generic input layer -> Joysticks/Gamepads),...

Re: Is my DE10-Nano Broken?

BTW, the picture shows your small DIP switches (SW10) seem to be incorrectly configured. According to the DE10 user manual the value 0 means ON and value 1 means OFF (don't ask me why, but it is counter intuitive). In your picture they are all set to 1, which is OFF. Therefore I'd suggest to set the...
