Re: Power Supply Centuriontech or Exxos

I have fitted a Mean-Well RT-65B in my STf. It barely fits there, but works just fine:

Re: Insert disk....

In order to TOS detect a disk change, the disk must be write protected, yet most games don't rely on TOS, but rather pools the FDD or waits for a key/fire.

I haven't noticed anything unusual with this demo on my 68HC000 equipped STe. Maybe I don't know what to look for.

Re: Can't find a US 2.06 TOS image

Some of that was based on the floppy disks themselves. Sometimes memories are deceptive ;) DS DD - 2 sides * 80 tracks * 9 sectors per track * 512 bytes per sector = 737280 bytes (720 KiB) DS HD - 2 sides * 80 tracks * 18 sectors per track * 512 bytes per sector = 1474560 bytes (1440 KiB = 1.406MiB...

The trace on right to C87 is not "slightly corroded" it is completely dissolved... same with 3 vias below it - they're probably gone as well.

Re: Retronic on my Falcon or TT never worked?

If you have a GOTEK with either Flash-Floppy or HxC firmware, you should be able to connect it to Atari and use right out of the box. Only remember to connect the floppy cable the right way (on STf/STe it will be "upside-down"). For either firmware, you have to have a FAT32 formatted pendr...

For the ones having a Gigafile/UltraSatan - do you have any resident programs / accessories loaded? I've found some of the CPXs cause a system crash when loading certain games/demos.

I have an STE with a "bad" DMA and a MC68HC000FN16 (it runs @8MHz in the STe) and "We Were @" runs just fine on it. Same on TOS 2.06 ad on TOS 1.62.

Re: IKBD RTC clock sync

I'll answer to myself. ST version of Atari Control Panel does sync the TOS time with IKBD on load, only STe version doesn't do that. Apparently they forgot to fix that in TOS 1.62, as STE_FIX, which is meant solely for 1.06 does that, while TOS 1.62 still doesn't sync the clock without the STE_FIX.

Re: Survey 2018 for a new batch of CosmosEx and MicroCosmos.

The FCC rules concern complete devices only (or kits for making a complete device). Any expansion module aka add-on is just sub-assembly. It won't work on its own. The "new" device will be a stock computer with the add-on installed.

Re: STE boot grey desktop now changing to green - grey

Your STe is old and the video signal timing is not stable enough for your modern TV. Thus your PAL decoder in TV goes out-of-sync and TV switches to monochrome mode.

IKBD RTC clock sync

TOS 2.06 synchronizes XBIOS clock with IKBD after each reset, so when you set the clock once in Control Panel, it is still set after reboot, until you won't power off the computer. However in TOS 1.xx it doesn't work. Only on STe with TOS 1.06 and 1.62 you may use STE_FIX.PRG in auto folder to do th...

Re: Y2K date fix for 2017?

I've discovered some interesting facts about the IKBD clock while working on my pass-through IKBD clock replacement. First of all - IKBD uses a proper BCD (de)coding routines, and thus ignores any half-bytes higher than 9. It may be used to set a time only, without altering a date or vice versa - yo...

Re: SF314 models

I have never seen a belt-driven DS floppy... there were 3 types of SF-314, but much more internal disk drive types. The oldest model had a square eject button, like most PC floppies have, the further model had a "slanted" (rhombus) type wide eject button (like in early STf), and the last o...

Re: Atari Mega STe 2 floppy drive Gotek + SMD-340

Twisted cable is meant only for PC FDD, as there are two separate MOTOR_ON (MOTEA and MOTEB) signals and two DRIVE_SELECT (DRVSA and DRVSB). So, with twisted cable, both drives are set as DS1, and the twist changes one to DS0. On Atari or plain Shugart there is only one MOTOR_ON shared by all drives...

Re: Noob hardware questions

To be completely precise Gotek has an ability to emulate a Hard Disk (up to 32MB), but it can't boot from it (so also no AUTO folder), and it locks both floppy drives while using this mode. It also uses the floppy interface to transfer data, so the speed isn't its strong point (it is faster than reg...

Re: Self-restarting STf with noisy video

Quick update as a self response: - it doesn't any more self-reboots, but it wasn't its only issue. The reason for restarts, probably was a bad contact/bent pin in MMU socket. - The HIGH mode is still noisy and very prone to Vcc fluctuations and noise (changing Vcc by 0.05V shifts the screen left or ...

Re: HxC External floppy cable, works as A and B

On most STf and all STe there are jumpers on board to route the DS0 and DS1 signals to appropriate pins of external FDD connector. You mas use them, together with a DSx jumpers on the internal FDD.

I've described it here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=32863

Typical issue for the STf/e keyboards. Resoldering ports should do the job. Just use good flux, and leaded solder.

I've actually checked not only the capacity of de-soldered caps, but also ESR and leakage current. For the tested units, they were all well in specs. Actually their ESR was better than some brand new generic Chinese LowESR 105*C rated equivalents.

Re: 6 chip TOS

The L/H mix has to do with word notation in variuos CPU... MC68000 is a big endian CPU, and thus the byte order is swapped (more significant byte first). This is only a byte order in the word, bits in bytes are in usual order for either architecture. So when preparing a Lo part of the TOS image you ...

Recapping an ST board - is it worth?

Have you ever found an faulty electrolytic capacitor on the ST board? I haven't - either on the board, nor on the PSU. According to my experience these WANG'S CAPs were high quality, and all still, after 30 years, are up to their specs.

What is your experience in this matter?
