Re: Atari 520STFM joystick port fault

Typical issue for the STf/e keyboards. Resoldering ports should do the job. Just use good flux, and leaded solder.

Re: Recapping an ST board - is it worth?

I've actually checked not only the capacity of de-soldered caps, but also ESR and leakage current. For the tested units, they were all well in specs. Actually their ESR was better than some brand new generic Chinese LowESR 105*C rated equivalents.

Re: 6 chip TOS

The L/H mix has to do with word notation in variuos CPU... MC68000 is a big endian CPU, and thus the byte order is swapped (more significant byte first). This is only a byte order in the word, bits in bytes are in usual order for either architecture. So when preparing a Lo part of the TOS image you ...

Recapping an ST board - is it worth?

Have you ever found an faulty electrolytic capacitor on the ST board? I haven't - either on the board, nor on the PSU. According to my experience these WANG'S CAPs were high quality, and all still, after 30 years, are up to their specs.

What is your experience in this matter?

Re: SF314 PSU dead - repair or replace?

I wouldn't throw out the PSU as they are pretty rare now. It is definitely repairable, only challenge is to open the case without much damage. Of course you can use any 5/12 volt DC adapter eg. from 3,5" USB HDD case. I'd also buy a new DIN plug instead of cutting and re-using original one (to ...

Re: Atari ST floppy drives and their limitations

So far I've checked the following:
EPSON SMD-380: 84 tracks,
CHINON FB-354AA: 84 tracks,
NEWTRONICS D357: 84 tracks,
SONY MP-F11W-U0: 82 tracks.

Is there any list of FDDs used in the ST computers?

Re: Atari 520 ST not reorganize floppy drive

There were a lot of DE TOS 520STs in Germany and in Poland and they were working... so it is not the reason. Does the floppy motor star when you try to access the A:? Is the FDD LED lit?

Re: GOTEK in SF314 floppy drive?

But with SF-354 you have to get rid of the original PCB, or at least re-route some signals on it. Anyways on SF-314 the original ribbon and power cables are also too short.

Re: GOTEK in SF314 floppy drive?

The slot in SF314 is enough for Gotek, you don't need to cut anything. You have to use spacers to mount the Gotek, because the original FDD (at least in version with "slanted"/wide eject button) is 1,5x higher than Gotek. It would fit like so: https://obrazki.elektroda.pl/9780746400_152113...

Re: Atari ST floppy drives and their limitations

Yes, but have anyone tested floppy drives used in various Atari ST, for how many tracks they support? After all, I think that each Epson SMD-380 will do 84 tracks.

Atari ST floppy drives and their limitations

I've recently bought an SONY MP-F11W-U0 floppy disk drive in an unknown condition for a good price (~12€). It looked almost brand new, but had difficulties in reading and writing disks, especially 11 sector/track. I have cleaned it, and replaced two electrolytic capacitors: on +5V rail (47uF/6.3V) a...

Re: Drive swap on STe without cutting pins/tracks

Same option is available in the STf - the jumper is marked W2, and the positions are: 2-3 = DS1->PIN5, 1-2 = DS0->PIN5.

P.S.
Currently my Gotek/HxC looks like this:

Re: 2 floppy drive at once ?

I hate the idea of cutting a good ST case. I'm not against modding, but it should be invisible and reversible. The DS1 signal in STf is also available internally, on the W2 jumper block. I'd accept replacing the fixed FDD cable with a goldpin header and a regular FDD ribbon cable (1:1), but every ST...

Re: STE motherboard works ok but high res output is VERY dim

The monochrome video signal in STE is digital (ON/OFF). If the signal levels are wrong this can be due to loose connection (cold joint) on PCB (probably on the socket to PCB connection) or the buffer (marked by red frame on a schematic below) circuit is broken. https://obrazki.elektroda.pl/562582060...

Re: BAD DMA - Myth or fact ?

My STE is from 1989 or 90, don't know exactly, but this is the early version with a wire-patches on the motherboard. I remember it making a garbage from floppy disk FAT after longer work. Now I turn it occasionally, but have Megafile and it did never do anything bad to it. Yet I have replaced the or...

Re: Can't find a US 2.06 TOS image

For RGB output there is no PAL or NTSC... I don't know much about MIST, but maybe the output isn't direct. My scandoubler alse always outputs 640x480 50Hz. As with the capacities - they have been lying since a long time: the 1.44MB floppy disk in no way had 1.44MB - it had 1440kiB, so 1.47MB or 1.41...

Re: Gotek, HXC and more

HxC is a firmware. It may be used either on Lotharek's SD Floppy emulator or on Gotek. Gotek uses USB Flash Drives, not SD cards. Gotek original firmware is almost useless, you have to flash it either to HxC or to FlashFloppy (only for Gotek). You may either use a special piece of software to assign...

HxC Mount works on Gotek/HxC too, but it probably it will prevent you from accessing Megafile, yet I haven't tried it and currently have no HxC licensed Gotek to check it for you.
