Re: Wall-Mounting a Falcon

Nice. But would there still be space for the IDE-to-SD adapter? :)

Re: Wall-Mounting a Falcon

Thanks, alexh. I'm getting a 'Sorry, content not available' error on that FB link -- but I'm guessing it's one of those 'take everything out the case and hang the parts on the wall' jobs? I'm actually thinking of doing that with my STFM. Give the motherboard a thorough clean, fit a modern PSU, find ...

If only it were that simple!

The desk is a fold-down thing, so no keyboard drawer!

Wall-Mounting a Falcon

Bit of an odd query this, but someone might have a good idea! I don't have any desk space I can dedicate to my Falcon or STFM. But I don't want to send them back up into the loft, not to be seen or used for another 20 years! What I *do* have is a nice bit of wall on the side of the chimney stack tha...

Re: Where To Buy: Male FDD Connectors

Nice one - ordered!

I think I saw this before but was put off due to the delivery time. But patience is a virtue - learnt that the hard way after getting the wrong part three times!

Cheers,
Chris

Where To Buy: Male FDD Connectors

Hi, I've posted a few other threads about my slimline-floppy project on my Falcon. I've discovered the correct pin-out and made my ribbon cable, but need 2x 34-pin Male cable-mount connectors. All the ones I've ordered online haven't been suitable. They've got the right number of pins at the right p...

Re: Fitting a Low-Profile Floppy Drive

Damnit.... Ribbon cable made... went to put the connectors on and it seems I've got the wrong type. They're cable-mount, male -- correct number of pins correct pin pitch... ...but the pins themselves are too thin and not quite as long as they should be. Looks like another order to RS Components is n...

Re: Fitting a Low-Profile Floppy Drive

Thanks for the replies! Ok - with my crazy breadboard setup, I've found that disconnecting pin 14 and connecting it to pin 10 on the floppy side makes the drive work. Just formatted an HD floppy successfully. Yaaay! I think these slim drives might make some of the signals 'multi-purpose'. Still, it ...

Re: Fitting a Low-Profile Floppy Drive

Ok -- so I've got a bunch of wires and breadboard. All the odd-numbered pins on the Falcon ribbon and the Drive ribbon are connected to eachother. All the even pins I've connected one-to-one, via the breadboard so I can experiment. I've tried swapping 10 and 12 by moving pins on the board -- no joy ...

Fitting a Low-Profile Floppy Drive

Hi, My aim is to mount a 'slim' 3.5" HD floppy drive into my Falcon, with an SD Card slot (IDE HDD) sat above it, then 3D print a nice plate for the casing to make the whole thing look neat. I've got everything I need, but am struggling a bit with getting the drive to work. I've got two drives ...

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Well, I tried linking pins as per viewtopic.php?p=165114#p165114

...but no joy. I've got a Teac slimline drive on order so I'll see if I have more luck with that!

Re: Falcon030 + NVDI 5: Screen Mode

Wait -- I take that back -- it's working!

I still had an ASSIGN.SYS and all kinds of stuff in place that I'd tinkered with to try to get NVDI to work before I replaced the RTC.

I cleared out the old NVDI installation and reinstalled... it's working!

Thanks, all.

Re: Falcon030 + NVDI 5: Screen Mode

Well, it's installed and working! Have set the boot video mode using BOOTCONF and it's fine.

The clock appears to be running slow, but I can live with that!

However, it doesn't seem to have resolved the problem with NVDI, which is unfortunate.

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

The machine's now got a shiny new RTC installed, but no joy with the floppy. With the data cable (presumably) upside down, the drive LED is on continuously, but A&B appear on the desktop (although they don't work). Up the other way, the drive does nothing and there's no drive icons on the deskto...

Re: WTB: ST/Falcon Floppy Drive Support Posts

All sorted -- thanks, Tronic. Hopefully ST-Freakz will be able to help out dhedberg!

I'm a bit amazed that even more grounding was required via the brass post. I mean, the RF shield (itself grounded, I presume) pretty much glomps the floppy drive, at least in the STFM!

WTB: ST/Falcon Floppy Drive Support Posts

Hi,

My STFM's missing all four supports for the floppy drive (3x plastic, 1x metal). My Falcon030's missing the metal support only.

Any source of all or some of those parts would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Falcon030 + NVDI 5: Screen Mode

I'm still curious on how these would work in the Falcon. http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=37404&sid=ec64b688fe1f8a6007c8e8142af00767&start=120 I ended up ordering this: http://atari.team-yankee.net/pages/bakery/atari-falcon-030-rtc-10.php It's waiting at the post office for me...

Re: Falcon030 - Motherboard Queries

I do not know if a Falcon will work without RTC, but I think there is no risk in trying it out. Well, in the name of science, I can confirm a Falcon does not boot with a missing RTC. Fan and Power LED come on. Drive LED flickers very dimly for about a sec, then pauses for <1 sec, then repeats its d...

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Just a quick update: I've got all the parts I need. But I can't try them out yet as my Falcon's currently missing her RTC chip. I've desoldered it in preparation for the arrival of the CR2032-powered replacement I've ordered from Arne at atari.team-yankee.net. I need to get to the post office to pic...

Falcon030 - Motherboard Queries

Hi, I've just had my Falcon030 stripped down fully for the first time. I've removed the old Dallas RTC chip in preparation for fitting the socket/coin-battery kit from Arne that I'll be picking up from the post office on Saturday. So I've got a couple of questions now I've had a good peer at the mob...

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Yes, that should work fine, depending on the height of the floppy drive. However, don't expect to fit the display there.. Cool. I've got a Gotek (flashed with HxC) set up as an external drive on a Commodore CDTV. Auto-booting into the file manager software makes the LCD pretty redundant anyway, so ...

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Hmm. Just had a thought for Phase II (assuming this works!) Using an SD Card extender, there'll be more free space above the floppy drive. I wonder if I could squeeze the innards of a Gotek in there too, with a switch to change between floppy and Gotek as Drive A:? That'd be pretty awesome - SD card...

Re: Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Thanks, everyone! I wish I'd thought to search for something like that SD Card extender! It never occurred to me to extend it that way! Custom Floppy/SD Arrangement

Hi, I've got this idea in my head of making good use of the 3.5" floppy drive slot in my Falcon. I'm currently running the original drive and an IDE-to-SD Card, hanging out the back of the machine. I want to design and 3D-print a blanking plate for the 3.5" slot, with the SD Card interface...

Re: Falcon030 + NVDI 5: Screen Mode

Hi Philippe,

I remember that dialog - I definitely chose Falcon mode.

I might be getting a couple of NVRAM chips from another forum member, but in the meantime I'll see if I can connect my Falcon via RF to a TV to see if any output appears.
