Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

To be clear, I am trying to learn how the computer works and determine where the problem is. While I've pulled and replaced random socketed components, those were relatively easy and at low cost. A defensible practice, I'd argue, considering how often it works. Upon the advice of the last poster, Ar...

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Long delay, but some progress. Got a scope. Went on a clock hunt. 4mhz is available on the 68901...pin 35 as I recall, but not the 2.x mhz at 17/18. I was able to easily find that on my 1040st, so I thought I had it. Bought a new crystal and replaced. Still no love, still no 2.x mhz coming off the c...

Re: New program: "Serial Disk"

I messed around a bit more... When compiling from the source you have posted online, I was able to get things partially working. I built MonoSerialDisk.exe from source. That combined with the original SerialDisk.TOS that you posted (in the original post) allowed me to read from the PC. The posted (a...

Re: New program: "Serial Disk"

OK, so bear with me. Considering that I am most likely the issue, I spent some time today trying various things where I might be goofing up. Things done: Tested RS232 Connection to my PC using terminal emulator on an Atari and PC. I can send stuff back and forth. Tested the RS232 Connection visa ter...

Re: New program: "Serial Disk"

Thanks for the replies: Re: Linux - I'm on Debian...but I do concede that I'm a version behind. I installed libmono and whatever dependencies it had, presumed that would be enough. Maybe I missed something, or the update didn't work right. Re: Visual Studio - Happy to do it. You made it, so that's t...

Re: New program: "Serial Disk"

This seems like a neat tool. I've tried to use it on a Windows 10 PC. Everything seems to be working right, but when I attempt to access the Serial Disk drive on the Atari, it causes the program on my PC to crash. Following output: serialdisk --port=COM3 --baud-rate=19200 Serial Disk v1.0.5318.34247...

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Well, I got my cartridge. It actually does something, which is more than I expected. Upon power up, it says "I6 Bus Error handling failed" Next, it moves to a screen with the heading "Testing MFP, Glue Timing, Video" ...and then prints...on the next line.. "T0 MFP Timer"...

Re: Best Electronics

I feel compelled to step in with further anecdotal evidence. I emailed Best on Sunday evening with a simple one item order with the necessary information to complete it. He emailed me back to confirm a detail (which was my fault) and it was shipped by Monday evening. I'm pleased. I'm in the U.S., so...

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

For whatever reason, and despite that my 1040 ST works just fine, I've gone ahead and reached out to Best electronics to get a diagnostic cart. When this is done, I'll be an ST tech guru.

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Well, I wouldn't even know how to find someone with an ST near me. North America isn't exactly ST country.

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Well, new DMA chip here, no go. Still boots to a white screen with a border, about 20 or 21 dark vertical lines evenly spaced across the screen.

Searching around suggests RAM is the most likely candidate. Seems painful to desolder/ replace em all. Any suggestions on how to narrow it down?

Re: I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Thanks for the replies, gang. Looking back at my post history here, I posted for the first time in 2006 and have been trying to get this thing working on and off since then. This ST deserves better, darnit. It was just so upsetting to finally (I think) figure it out and them have it all go up in smo...

I borked my 520ST Help?!?

Posted on Atariage as well, so I can soak up as much Atari wisdom as possible: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/273305-st-tech-woeshelp-my-own-darn-fault/ I was more upset when I posted there, so forgive my rambling style. Executive summary: I borked my DMA chip in my 520 ST, but maybe did worse and...

Stuck on Single Sided

Hi all. New to ST, having a problem with my single sided to double sided conversion.

I have a SF354 with a dead SS drive. I've picked up a new HD drive, set the jumper to 0 and everything works. Yay...but it only works as a SS drive. I can't get DS disks to read.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the clarification, folks. I think that mod is coming out this weekend... The floppies, I'm not sure. I think I'll tinker around with the busted ones, see if i can get them to work...and in the mean time...see if I can convince my modern PC to write single sided DD disks. STDisk seems to b...

Reseating chips definitely works better for me... But regarding the floppy... 1. I really hate modding stuff...and only do it if it's absolutely necessary. 2. Though I'm sure the drives are compatible...wouldn't there be issues with fitting in a moder 3 1/2" floppy? Specifically theres the gian...

New user with questions...I bet you LOVE topics like this...

First of all...I think I should mention that I'm in the US...where it seems like ST wasn't nearly as popular... I posted some questions over at Atariage...but this place is ST focused...so hopefully I'll get a bit more attention... I did use the search function to try and find some answers to my que...
