Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

For those who don't know where the downloads for the 5200 and Atari 8-bit 'Scramble' conversions - are - are here... http://atariage.com/forums/topic/281372-scramble-5200/page-1 and http://atariage.com/forums/topic/281589-scramble-5200-conversion/page-1 Here - 1/2 way down the page is the official v...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

For those who don't know it? AtariBlast! can run with a minimum of 16K - Tested it on a standard Atari 400 16K machine - the 8mbit version running off an Atarimax 8mbit flashcart. Purists may say oh - this is cheating - as 8mbit flashcarts were not present back in the day. Well then - a simpler vers...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

AtariBlast! is free to download via the atariage forums. The 8-bit versions can run under emulation for those who don't have the flashcart yet or 1088K of memory upgraded. I'm hopeful someone will take the game to the Portland Retrogaming Gaming Expo which is in Oct? in the US. I think Atarimax woul...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

Nice to read your post... Paul couldn't get hold of blank (or reusable) floppies - being the main reason for not going the disk route. Going flashcart - did mean that a 5200 version was now more easily possible to provide. And even 16K Atari 400's can run the flashcart. Which I just tested today - i...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

AtariBLAST! is finished as a project/game - and not a demo. This was/is in early Sept 2016. Work started on this project from the 1st January 2012 .... It comes in 3 flavours - Atari 5200 (requires the Atarimax 5200 Ultimate SD cartridge), the Atari 8-bit version for Atari 400/800 etc to 130XE - tha...

Re: GTIA Blast

There were at least 2 games back then - that had a go at GTIA 9 mode - Colony 7 and Space Lobsters within a game - but they were not successful efforts. Not counting Koronis Rift which just used it for an instrument panel. Hawkquest likewise made limited use of it too. Recently there was Battle Eagl...

Re: GTIA Blast

This is probably the way to actually do the Zaxxon game? To depart from the original coin-op graphics... The actual game play is not duplicated here - because AtariBLAST! was originally Vertical Scrolling only - then it changed a bit here and there, finally to include horizontal scrolling. I forgot ...

Re: GTIA Blast

Here is a sneak peak video of a later level in AtariBLAST! - formerly GTIABlast! http://youtu.be/Sd8JxSYLUX4 While it looks like a Zaxxon game - it really isn't - but it does show that this project now uses horizontal scrolling levels in it. I have always wanted to see a better Zaxxon game done - th...

Re: GTIA Blast

I will mentions that of this date - that development of AtariBLAST! (ie. GTIABlast!) is still continuing.... onwards... This project has gone far beyond it's original specs - which was meant to be something far simpler than what it is now... Further demos were on public display - at the Atari Party ...

Re: Atari 2600

I can say that I have never played the Atari 2600 console - even back in the day - as it never? turned up over here??? (ie. New Zealand) But of course I knew of it - since I read the computer magazines back in the early 80s'. I have used Stella of late - not really to play the 2600 games but just to...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

There is a link I think at the above site - because I uploaded the clip to Youtube. What you could do - is compare the original Atari hardware hooked up to your plasma - versus Altirra (laptop/PC) hooked up to the same - and see if you can tell the difference? Which is better. Which is what you may ...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

I purchased my first home computer - an Atari 800 with 48k in December 1982 in Hammersmith, London - I forget the exact price I paid, maybe around £700? as the price was dropping slightly then, with 410 recorder, Shamus, and Star Raiders and Pacman carts. It must have been around a couple of years? ...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

I think it's all a matter of doing a little bit of research, and seeing what programs/games are running on which computer - to give you some idea of whether that particular computer will suit you or not? And to not rely upon advertising alone. In NZ the Atari 400 (& 800) prices - I think was inf...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

I'm not so good with my memory reading stuff - but I will guess that it's actually around 1978? That the Atari 400/800 computers were designed - around this time. Star Raiders is copyrighted 1979 - and I think it's mentioned in an interview with the programmer - that he had the extra time to really ...

Re: Atari the 8 bit wonder

It's always important to get the dates correct - if you can. The Atari 400/800 computers were not released in 1979 - but rather, they were announced in that year. Whereas it would be around 1980 or even 1981? Depending on where you lived - as we're not all in the US... that they were generally avail...

Re: Best Atari 8bit shoot'em up?

It's always subjective (personal) as to what shooter you like over another. For me - Dropzone would be No.1 - if you were in awe of the Defender coin-op - and wanted a decent version of it, running on the Atari 800. The Atari Defender cart was a huge disappointment. I think the story is - that Arche...

While it doesn't have the flash graphics of Atariblast! - a small project that was completed - as a breakaway from that project - is "Strictly Gone Bananas" completed for the 2015 New Year's disk(s) - you'll find it's downloadable from atariage - or Polish sites... I think it's on the 2nd ...

Re: The smooth machine

Everybody is different and this shows in what people are passionate about and why - even though you may have things in common. I don't think the ST fans will like to admit that their favourite computer was seriously flawed - coming off 2nd to the Amiga - and others? You had to put up with jerky spri...

Nice to see you back... There has not been a public release of the latest version of AtariBLAST! - but it did make an appearance at the Atari Party, and the Portland Retrogaming Expo. Re: Atari XL-XE and software houses

The Atari Home Computers (400/800) really had only a few years of prominence and active support - the peak of which was probably the Synapse years - where we saw the appearance of Blue Max, Encounter - and then it all went downhill rather fast. The appearance of the XL/XE line didn't see the release...

I should mention that - with retrogames development.... If a programmer does not have the graphic design skill to produce high quality graphic designs - he should be able to get someone else to do that. There should be keen graphics guys (and girls) out there, who would do that kind of work for you....

Re: Alive and kicking

What I take a great deal of interest in - deals with valid ideas and concepts - answering the why's people have - fairly and reasonably. Basic storytelling - say of the hero/heroine in any kind of story - is very faulty in all the various media, etc etc. I'll say why it is - if we can agree that we ...

Re: The smooth machine

When Mame first turned up - I got straight into it - marvelling at how you can run the classic arcade games accurately - on what was then a 40Mhz PC - and now it runs all manner of ROMs. I haven't checked out the latest version to see what late model games have since been added. Its more of a questi...

Re: The smooth machine

Cost was always a factor for me - as far buying new consoles and new games, etc etc. But also the First Person Shooter was not my favourite genre - as it became more and more graphic. And to endlessly play the scenario of killing people against my own morals. Of course, there is a link with a certai...
