Re: Gauntlet II vs Ranarama (ST) - Which Is Best?

I had a copy of ranarama with my original STe explorer pack. Amazingly Atari managed to bundle a game which didn't work with the Ste!

Re: STE horizontal hardware scroll

What's the CPU cost of saving/restoring registers too? What's the CPU cost of 200 timer b interrupts that just RTE? I did a dister with timer b and hardscroll but it must have been 20 years or so ago :D I have a figure in mind of around 20% CPU for that.

Re: STE horizontal hardware scroll

The issue is the maximum number of words that can be skipped on the end of a line. :) If you can reset the scroll and address every line it doesn't matter. You can "skip" as many words as you like :D

Re: TOS 3.1 desktop for the ST

Interesting. I also have a dev beta of multitos which I've never seen on line. It has the older st style windows for the AES. I'll attach it tonight.

TOS 3.1 desktop for the ST

Hi. I'm sure I posted an attachment of the TT desktop to the forum as a prg file for general STs.
I'm looking to see if I can get it working on my ST but I can't find it. If someone has it, can they please upload it?

Re: We redesign the STE

OK. So point us at a few recent games released on the Arch. Say within the last 5 years. We had a BBC in our house. I turned my nose up at it and used a Spectrum instead. I much preferred the speccy. The Spectrum scene is still amazing even now. Much healthier than the Atari and Amiga scenes.

Re: We redesign the STE

True for the arm64 port yes. So far. Who knows the future ? There is an active community of talented coders, let's see what they will do. All the talented coders I know left the archimedes 10 years ago. I've not seen anything interesting retro wise on the platform. It's the most inactive retro plat...

Re: We redesign the STE

Arm32 is dead now. There's no arm64 port of RiscOS which is the future. There's no high end hardware. It's a hobby platform like the Amiga and the ST. At least the ST has EmuTOS and the Amiga has Aros. There's no open source equivalent on the archimedes. I know all about the mess behind the RiscOS &...

Re: We redesign the STE

Dude. RiscOS is dead as a dodo. I'm sorry, if you think RiscOS is a healthy software ecosystem you're deluded. The ST and Amiga scene is way more vibrant. You need to face reality. It may be fun as a retro platform but it is not commercial.

Re: We redesign the STE

The problem with the STE was that it didn't offer an incentive to existing ST users to upgrade. Most of the features were gaming oriented. If you were a serious user the SIMM slots and blitter would be useful. The DMA audio might be useful. It's not enough reason to upgrade. I'd have supported more ...

Re: We redesign the STE

Well you can't buy an Acorn Archimedes these days either. It's dead as a dodo. Switching to an archimedes would not have been a sane choice. It had zero future.

Re: We redesign the STE

The arch was doomed from the get go. It was not popular outside schools in the UK. I only knew one other archimedes user. I have a 5k and a risc PC but they don't mean as much to me as the Amiga or STe. I prefer the STe / TT and Falcon to the archimedes. I'd prefer smashing my head off a brick wall...

Re: We redesign the STE

The archimedes was simply too expensive in 1990. My first STe was 259 GBP in 1990. How much was an arch back then? 1100?

Re: We redesign the STE

The ST and Amiga didn't survive into the mid 90s because they didn't evolve. :( I'd take an STe over any PC clone in 1990. PC machines were utter junkola back then.

No. This is just in the good tradition of bad documentation.

Haha! I guess the sarcasm in previous post went by completely unnoticed :-D

Just add the hack to the Amiga branch of EmuTOS. :)

I think building a complete computer platform from scratch in 6 months is a herculean achievement. You can bet that the engineers working there were the best in the world.

Re: EmuTOS 0.9.9

A brief look at the atari compendium. The sources to TOS are on the net somewhere. It might be worth digging through them. The Atari Compendium is not an official Atari documentation, is it? Sources, unless officially published at the time are certainly not any kind of documentation at all. And any...

Re: EmuTOS 0.9.9

The Atari ABI specifies that return codes to functions will be returned in d0 IMHO. For a void function that will be pot luck... IE anything which just happens to be in d0 when the function returns if the registers aren't preserved. If a function is marked (void) you can't expect a sane return code....

Re: EmuTOS 0.9.9

If this behaviour is undocumented and there's a documented way to do it, relying on it is stupid IMHO. Has this function always been documented this way? Anyone expecting a void function to return something deserves to have their code broken. BTW initial Blitter support is awesome. Text blitting nex...

Re: 'communication problem with people'

There are two billion active android devices out there and one billion iOS devices. Windows desktop is going the way of windows phone. It can't compete on cost with a cheap tablet for basic user needs. EG facebook, ebay etc etc. I give it five years to drop off the face of the earth. There's a good ...

Re: 'communication problem with people'

Surely the purpose of an autobuild is for continuous integration testing? Ie to make sure a patch hasn't broken the build process. If you want a stable release, wait for the proper public release.
