Re: DO YOU THINK DO WE THINK DO THEY!! THINK what atari hard

There's still plenty on that shopping page. The more specialist stuff may well be left out as there wouldn't be enough market. So people make their own. But that doesn't seem to hinder creativity. Maybe creativity is accelerated if designers don't have to consider clearing a huge tub of redundant pa...

Atari just the latest in my personal Science Museum hangar!

If joy of ownership means nothing else, it can still mean playing with an old Atari. I'm always bowled over by what you can get on the dirt cheap (or cheap enough) second hand market. The studio icon has actually been the final addition to mine but I'm glad I got around to it in the end. I have a 52...

Re: Stereo Master sampler fs on ebay (not mine)

As far as I'm aware, it's the same result on any ST - lo-fi and rather crap. You can always make your own hi-fi samples with a PC and port them to your STe.

Re: - Boot Directly To Steem? -

Seems you can do it in XP by entering a new Registry string at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Still means loading everything else though. Could also add stuff this way: http://www.ehow.com/how_5932916_adjust-startup-xp-dos-screen.html Or deselect what you don't wan...

Re: - Boot Directly To Steem? -

May be impossible anyway as Windows always has to load first. But hey, there may be some cracker reading this prepared to tinker around for pleasure or pique. Amiga Forever can boot straight to its OS, as can Linux on a CD. Maybe the boys at Steem fancy re-tooling their own versions for pleasure and...

Crumbs. I always seem to see them around.

Good job I bought a few extra just last month. Best stock up on the keyboards too. Some old PCs just won't let you handle them with USB before booting into software.

Re: TT issue / horizontal lines across the screen

I suspect the ROM or a graphics chip. Unless you've got something special installed or get a buzz from mending old equipment, maybe a look at Ebay is the easiest fix.

The Atari isn't modular in construction so mending one was virtually always a specialist job.

What's so wrong with ps2 anyway?

Poor little ps2. Just 'cos it's not fashionable.

Reaping the Ebay harvest

It's gone now. Quite a nice retro piece actually, pretty up-to-date features for its day. Don't even need the cartridge to play with it, as I soon found out: http://www.remix64.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8455#p90238 That's gone but a nice pile of 720K floppies have popped up: http://www.ebay....

Re: Monitor question - modern or authentic?

I suppose they are unless you get something more expensive or get busy with soldering irons and schematics. Main thing is to just get them going well enough with pocket money boxes. And they actually get better all the time. A vital need is to have computer video displayed without CRT buzz picked up...

Re: Steem in fullscreen, how...?

....Oh yes, I remember. It suddenly turned into large window again on Maximise just now. I crashed it by trying to run a higher resolution than Windows would allow it (having forced Steem to run in 640x480 mode), allowing me to restart and have Steem reset all its values so I could run again fresh. ...

Steem in fullscreen, how...?

Never mind, done it now.

I don't know why I never noticed the Maximise button. (Probably because the Vin Vice emulator I always use simply has a large window mode when you do that.)

Re: Monitor question - modern or authentic?

Here's my partial solution at best: This hi-res VGA apparently works flawlessly. I saw a Youtube vid on it and that's all the cast-iron proof I need. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.hill403/stvga.jpg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATARI-ST-VGA-MONITOR-ADAPTER-SOUND-LEAD-CABLE-/320526274539 And this V...

I don't know about it other than it's £5 cheaper than the PS/2 adapter: http://pest.atari.org/

Nice. We have two to choose from.

Re: Monitor question - modern or authentic?

You don't necessarily need the 'proper' stuff, even for damage. I've fixed up case gashes with a touch of spray paint and turps-soaked tissues a good few times and it always seems to work. Even the nastier scratches on LCD screens themselves can be repaired with black spray on a cotton bud to line t...

Re: Amiga 1200.....why did I bother?!

SOLUTION: I've a 1200 and there's no reason games shouldn't load from its disk unless the system is faulty or stuff hasn't been installed properly. Workbench has more features than TOS and is reliable, though TOS is lean and pre-installed in ROM. Software called Relokick will allow the A500 softwar...

Re: Monitor question - modern or authentic?

If there is inbuilt obsolescence then you end up winning by upgrading your kit - faster RAM, bigger capacity hard drive, you name it. But I think part of the reason the manufacturers can get away with flimsy products is also because PCs aren't sold as PCs. PCs are binary controlled engines of variou...

Re: uk shops to sell games?

I don't think new boards have floppy controllers any more. Nor can Windows format 720K floppies any more, which I think is a bit of an oversight. Retro gaming is now big enough for these things to be re-incorporated I think. Windows is full of crap anyway, so it's not as if there isn't the disc room...

Re: Monitor question - modern or authentic?

Of course not all new ones are rubbish, just the stock-'em-high kind people usually buy only because the salesman says their old ones are suddenly crap. The brand names with the flashy ad campaigns. But looked after, a PC can now outlive the old life expectancies. A case in point - maybe 5 years ago...

No mystery really. Ever more complex technology, ever smaller spaces, ever cheaper costs. Three factors which are both problems of, and solutions to, Mankind's unreasonable technical wants. Ever more unreasonable. You want top-heavy specs at (comparatively) sherbet-dab prices? That's OK, just expect...

For copying, nice and simple is the Floppy Image And File Transfer Program for Windows - http://atari.8bitchip.info/floimgd.php Insert your floppy disk, select an ST game ROM image, click to copy and you're ready to roll. The program formats the disk in the Atari standard and the imaged data is simp...

Re: uk shops to sell games?

Obviously there's Ebay and websites but I guess you're hankering after that 'pure' shopping precinct atmosphere. Oddly, there's that extra dimension to actually buying from a rack in town. Even with software for an ancient system. I wrote about it, such was the feel. http://www.remix64.com/board/vie...
