Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

OK, I think that we went pretty much off topic - so please open new thread about metadata, what would be if, and such things. We should stick here to what is really done and talk about it. Just to say my opinion about said in last couple post by Calimero: You can call it whatever you want - files, d...

Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

My point was that people obsessed with conspirations claim often complete false things. I can not prove that some event happened differently. I was not there. But when we are at technical details - yes, often. Need to add that complete 'what would be' talk is so stupid. What I rather think is: Bill ...

Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

Just watched silly movie Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999) . Most interesting thing was at the end - Bill Gates bought part of Apple, and actually helped in renewing it after crash about 1998 ... So, dear Apple owners, you are the reason why Bill Gates is the richest man on Planet  And I see...

Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

... Note: some could argue that Windows95 is more useful than win10. I mean why can't I kill Cortana, or strip out all the dumb features I will never use to make it lighter? I removed Win 10 from my both PCs. But Cortana was easy to get rid off. I don't think that it was some load for machine, OS, ...

Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

Talking about continuing TOS line on some new architecture - let's say PC, as native OS, running directly, not via emulation (like Aranym) - well, first thing you need to solve is multitasking. Not primitive one as MagiC. Rewriting ASM parts as BIOS is not too hard - other can even compile. And then...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

It will not work on Falcon - as said sample freq is not supported on it.
Maybe to do version with 12.5 KHz samples ? I can do other things necessary for Falcon run.

Re: cosmos question

Driver sees not what type of card is inserted. Because it affects nothing in way how driver works. And as said, driver does not the transfers - but CE-DMA handshaking, on HW level. I suggest to you that buy min 4GB Kingston in some decent shop, and then say that Kingston works not well with CE and m...

Re: cosmos question

There is lot of fake cards on 'market' .
Other thing may be that 2GB cards are not HC, just bare SD cards, and that is not so reliable with CE. But all it affects not driver or versus.

Re: MEGAFILE 60 disk capacity issue

We need to think on everything - so on not rare case of people who read it just in rush.
They will see only "RLL uses the same density as MFM." - and that can trigger some bad ideas. That's why need to add some more details. Or just to formulate it differently .

Re: Modern OS-es, pros and contras, experiences with ..

Well, Pentium 4 is now history. I remember silly discussions at Benchmark forum. There was some smarthead, total Intel biased, who basically only quoted from Intel propaganda. Intel self realized at one moment that it is bad way - they talked about work at 10GHz for instance. So, needed to make new ...

I use more than one OS: ... Android has failed randomly on tablets and phones for me, requiring factory resets. The performance is pretty poor with a 1.3GHz tablet running C64 emulators slower than an old Pentium 2-333MHz. ... I don't think that is reflects real power ratio. I tested with diverse, ...

Re: MEGAFILE 60 disk capacity issue

Most MFM drives can work with RLL without problems. RLL uses the same density as MFM. Those MFM drives were manufactured before RLL controllers reached the market. They just weren't factory tested with RLL. I don't think that "RLL uses the same density as MFM." is good formulation. Even i...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

Think I may have cracked it, in the .TOS version I have a small bit of code that loads all the code+data in one go, disables interrupts, copies the game from wherever it is currently into memory starting at $400 (as that's where the original game expects it to be) then jumps to $400. I think it's m...

Re: Help getting SSE running on this machine

So, VC redist. is not backward compatible, and we need to install multiple versions (if it is possible and they don't kill each other) for making SW to run ?
That sucks ! Microsoft did this things better in the past. Or they just want people getting new Win versions.

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

... The game starts at memory address $400 which is where a lot of system variables live, so any hard disk driver that lives down that end of the RAM will have a problem. I tested it via the hard disk support in Hatari which worked, but I haven't got a hard disk for my ST so can't test it for real....

Re: Mega STe Hd floppy problem

Something trivial, just for case: did you format those HD floppies on Atari ? If not, go in File menu, Format - there must be HD as choice too. Format floppy if possible - if it works not right from start then there is some problem with setting Ajax in HD mode. (what is double clock actually).

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

I have disabled the Auto folder on the HD and no ACC or other programs are running in the background, so the STE is “clean”. It seems that the Game somehow uses the same DMA routines as the HD and therefore it hangs when it tries to start the sound with the HD on. Any clue to what the problem could...

Re: Blitter issues on a Mega STE

There are some differences between Atari ST, TT, Falcon compatible floppy drives and those which were sold after ST era. You need to look pin layouts, understand what is for what, etc. Then reconnect some pins by need. There is no general solution for all possible drives. And, I don't think that it ...

Re: Floppy image restoration request - images have Side 2 folder

These were made using dd with a usb floppy drive. I don't have a working Atari ST that I can use to image these on the Atari. Yep, that's known problem - USB can not 10 sectors/track - so you need some other way. As said, some older PC can do it - but then, still need special SW for Windows, what o...

I 'developed' my safe way: before pressing submit button I save body of my just edited post in clipboard, or if it is longer may save even in txt file.
